The Maze of Naxos Chora

If you visit the islands of Greece in July then you will experience the Meltemi winds from the north which typically blow around 7-8 on the European Beaufort wind scale (equivalent to 28-45 mph). It sounds annoying but the alternative is worse: the wind keeps down the scorching temperatures. You actually should consider bringing a lightweight sweater to keep the goosebumps at bay! On Naxos in the wind you can find protected beaches or make alternative plans like sightseeing and hiking.

Currently the wind is blowing at 23-27 mph, and howling. Our original plan to ride assisted bikes around the local beaches is ruled out, replaced with exploring and shopping the Chora.

It is fun to walk around the maze-like Chora. It doesn't really matter which way you turn because you won't be lost for long. Greg got brave and took the lead, somehow knowing to turn right. It was probably a guess (a 50-50 chance) because he failed at the next turn. A little later he spotted "our" tree that distinctly marks our apartment's location, and headed in its direction - not realizing there are actually three prominent trees in the Chora. (Even after a couple of days here you still don't want to be following him.)

The old part of Naxos Town is a jumble of cobblestone pathways leading up to the castle. We are renting the big white house right under the castle, just left of that tall "Christmas" tree (a Norfolk Island Pine).

The Old Market is a jumble of narrow, cobblestone paths and stairways passing through archways and little tunnels all around the Naxos Castle. The area is filled with boutiques, local food shops, galleries, tavernas, and bars.

Come wander here and enjoy the shopping!

At this intersection, the local fresh water fountain, we turn up to the left to get to our place. You can also go this way to the castle.

Super cute passages

Shopping for trinkets to bring back home

If you can find this bakery, do not even hesitate - go inside and buy a loaf of the most delicious bread ever!  Crispy crust and moist insides...mmmm!

You can just point to what you want or ask Panayiotis for the "to psomi tou foornu too veloni".  We pointed to the loaf in the back corner (2 euros).

The port's promenade (on the harbor beneath the castle) attracts the most people, and particularly becomes alive in the evening.

Fresh octopus anyone?

To Souvlaki tou Maki is currently holding the #1 spot on Tripadvisor of all places to eat in in Naxos Town. It was the best pita sandwich we have had yet; they have an extensive menu of other items as well.

A great way to end a day!
